Metabolic rate and thermal insulation in albino and hairless mice.
نویسنده
چکیده
1. Rates of oxygen consumption of albino and hairless mice were measured in a metabolism chamber during periods of approximately 5 or 24 hr. Rectal temperature was measured before and after each period. The chamber temperatures used were 22, 30 and 32 degrees C for both albino and hairless, and in addition 34 and 36 degrees C for the hairless mice.2. The mean age and body weight of the albino mice were 102 days and 34.6 g; the corresponding values for the hairless mice were 87 days and 32.8 g.3. The mean minimum rates of oxygen consumption (ml./kg.min) were 31.0 for the albino and 38.8 for the hairless mouse; the corresponding estimated critical temperatures were in the ranges 30-32 degrees C for the albino mouse and 32-34 degrees C for the hairless mouse.4. The mean values for core-ambient thermal insulation ( degrees C.m(2).hr/kcal) were 0.418 and 0.328 for the albino mouse, and 0.275 and 0.221 for the hairless mouse, at 22 and 30 degrees C respectively in each case.

Topic A7: Thermal comfort GENERATING EMPIRICAL PROBABILITIES OF METABOLIC RATE AND CLOTHING INSULATION VALUES IN FIELD STUDIES USING WEARABLE SENSORS
This research introduces a mixed-method framework to estimate metabolic rate and clothing insulation as objective and quantitative variables. Methods included automated visual diaries and both environmental and wearable sensors. Applying this framework in an exploratory study, during the winters of 2012 and 2013, allowed empirical probabilities of metabolic rate and clothing insulation values t...
متن کاملNo insulating effect of obesity.
The development of obesity may be aggravated if obesity itself insulates against heat loss and thus diminishes the amount of food burnt for body temperature control. This would be particularly important under normal laboratory conditions where mice experience a chronic cold stress (at ≈20°C). We used Scholander plots (energy expenditure plotted against ambient temperature) to examine the insula...
متن کاملSeasonal variation in thermal energetics of the Australian owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles cristatus).
Many birds living in regions with seasonal fluctuations in ambient temperatures (T(a)) typically respond to cold by increasing insulation and adjusting metabolic rate. Seasonal variation in thermal physiology has not been studied for the Caprimulgiformes, an order of birds that generally have basal metabolic rates (BMR) lower than predicted for their body mass. We measured the metabolic rate an...
متن کاملFuzzy Logic Based Life Estimation of PWM Driven Induction Motors
Pulse-width modulated (PWM) adjustable frequency drives (AFDs) are extensively used in industries for control of induction motors. It has led to significant advantages in terms of the performance, size, and efficiency but the output voltage waveform no longer remains sinusoidal. Hence, overshoots, high rate of rise, harmonics and transients are observed in the voltage wave. They increase voltag...
متن کاملCalculation of clothing insulation by serial and parallel methods: effects on clothing choice by IREQ and thermal responses in the cold.
Cold protective clothing was studied in 2 European Union projects. The objectives were (a) to examine different insulation calculation methods as measured on a manikin (serial or parallel), for the prediction of cold stress (IREQ); (b) to consider the effects of cold protective clothing on metabolic rate; (c) to evaluate the movement and wind correction of clothing insulation values. Tests were...
